FIFO vs. DIDO: Which One’s Right for You?

FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) and DIDO (Drive-In Drive-Out) are both common ways to work in remote or regional locations. Each has its benefits and challenges—choosing the right one depends on your lifestyle, location, and long-term goals.

What’s the Difference?

  • FIFO: The company flies you to the site. You live in remote accommodation for your swing, then fly home during your rostered time off. Common in WA, NT, and far-north QLD.
  • DIDO: You drive to and from site. Depending on the job, this may be daily, weekly, or for the full swing. Common in regional VIC, NSW, and QLD.

Advantages of FIFO

  • Paid Flights – Often included in your package.
  • Longer Rostered Breaks – 2:1, 8:6, and 7:7 rosters mean more full days off.
  • Broader Job Access – You can live anywhere and still work remote jobs.
  • Higher Pay – FIFO roles often offer more money due to their remoteness.

Advantages of DIDO

  • Stay Closer to Family – Especially if you return home after shifts.
  • Lower Commute Stress – No airports or long flights.
  • Stable Routine – Keeps life more consistent week to week.
  • Better for Kids and Commitments – Easier to balance life at home.

Things to Consider

  • Location – FIFO is ideal if you’re far from job hubs. DIDO is more realistic if you’re in a regional area with site access.
  • Family Life – FIFO requires long stretches away. DIDO lets you return more regularly.
  • Fatigue – FIFO commutes are long but spaced out. DIDO may cause daily fatigue if driving far.
  • Career Goals – FIFO offers higher pay and access to larger projects.

Final Thoughts

If you’re young, mobile, and chasing income and experience, FIFO is often the faster route. If you have family priorities or live near mining or construction corridors, DIDO might offer a more balanced path.

There’s no right or wrong—just what’s right for you right now.
