The Pros and Cons of FIFO Work

FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) work is unique. It offers great money and big opportunities—but it also demands a lot. Before you dive in, it’s important to understand both sides of the lifestyle.

The Pros

1. Higher Pay

Many FIFO roles pay significantly more than equivalent city jobs—especially in mining, construction, and oil & gas.

2. More Time Off

Rosters like 2:1 or 8:6 give you long stretches of time off that full-time city roles rarely offer.

3. No Rent or Food Costs on Site

Accommodation, meals, and transport are covered—so you save more, faster.

4. Fast-Track Career Growth

Remote work often accelerates promotion. If you perform well, there’s room to move up quickly.

5. Exposure to Big Projects

You’ll gain experience on large-scale operations and work with some of the best people in your field.

The Cons

1. Long Time Away from Home

Being away for 1–3 weeks at a time can be tough on relationships and mental health.

2. Isolation & Loneliness

Remote sites can be repetitive and isolating, especially if you’re new or introverted.

3. Shift Fatigue

12-hour shifts for 14 days straight can be exhausting, physically and mentally.

4. Lifestyle Limitations

No home-cooked meals, gym equipment might be basic, and personal space is limited.

5. Risk of Burnout

Without strong routines and rest during your time off, burnout is common in FIFO.

Final Thoughts

FIFO life isn’t for everyone. But for those who can handle the physical and mental challenges, it’s a powerful way to earn well, grow fast, and gain freedom. The key is knowing what you’re walking into—and planning for it.
